Natural disasters are confounding. Their tremendous forces erupt with a power to render all else insignificant. Vulnerable to their awesome powers, people evolve during these storms and surprises emerge within both individuals and entire communities. During the storm, one begins to consider his place in the broader world context, and in the potent silence that follows, individuals not only engage in intimate introspective exercises as they struggle to grapple with the spectacular event, but they also come together in a remarkable display of primal support, shared strife, and universal affection.
