"Orientation in Painting: Caspar David Friedrich"

Visiting Scholar (Baltimore, MD)

Caspar David Friedrich has long been regarded as one of two great German 19th-century painters (the second being Adolph Menzel).  But there has been no general agreement as to how best to understand his marvelous paintings.  In this lecture Michael Fried approaches them in the light of Immanuel Kant's 1786 essay on "orientation in thinking," with surprising results.

This lecture is sponsored by the Visiting Artists and Scholars Committee.
